Dr. Marja Verhoef

 

Marja J.Verhoef, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Complementary Medicine. Her research focuses on a wide range of factors related to complementary and alternative medicine, including determinants of use, decision making, communication, information needs, meaning and importance of evidence and integration of CAM in conventional medicine, mostly among cancer patients. She is passionate about methodological issues such combined methods research and identifying and developing appropriate designs to evaluate whole systems of CAM treatment and care, as well as appropriate outcome measures to evaluate such systems. She is Co-Chair of the Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for CAM Research and was the first President of the International Society of Complementary Medicine Research.

Marja greatly enjoys working with her research team consisting of PhD students and research associates who work in various areas such a CAM in medical education, integration of CAM in conventional health care settings, complex systems of care, pathways of cancer care and several other topics.
